Tips to write an essay for SSC CHSL Descriptive Exam

Every year Staff Selection Commission conducts SSC CGL, CHSL and various other competitive exams to employ staff members for central government departments. Exams are conducted for all the levels from clerk to officer. Officer level exam is SSC CGL which is open for the graduates and SSC CHSL is a clerical level exam which is open for under graduates.

Every year SSC CHSL is conducted and more than 30 lacs candidates appear in the exam. It makes the exam very competitive and needs a thorough preparation. It is conducted in three phases i.e Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3.

SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam has four sections and it has objective type questions. Tier 2 is Descriptive paper which includes questions based on writing skills such as letter and essay writing. Tier 1 is easy to crack and Tier 2 is a difficult one as it requires language proficiency and general awareness to give full justice to the topic given.

Let us discuss how to write an essay for SSC CHSL Descriptive Exam as most of us become out of practice after leaving school. In school we learn to write essay and everyone knows how to write it. But competitive exam demands more technical skills than just a simple idea about the topic being asked in the exam.

Tips to write an essay for SSC CHSL Descriptive Exam
  1. SSC CHSL Descriptive paper generally has topics based on Social Issues, Politics, Sports, Environmental concerned, Schemes and Governance, Ecological issues, etc. While practicing to write an essay choose one of these topics and then write.
  2. To master the writing skills for an essay for SSC CHSL exam you must read the topics appearing in the exam in the newspaper to get an idea about the same. The more you read the better will be the outcomes of your writings in the exam. Tier 2 is a qualifying exam and one must score well to get a good rank in the merit list.
  3. Prefer to read newspapers like The Hindu, The Indian Express, Economic Times etc., for English medium essay writers and for Hindi medium writers one can follow Dainik Jagran, Dainak Bhaskar, NavBharat, etc. Read at least 15 to 20 articles daily to enhance your writing skills.
  4. Note down new words coming in the articles while reading newspaper. Search for the meaning and usage of the same. This exercise will increase your vocabulary which you can use in the essay to make it more impressive.
  5. Learn basic rules of grammar to form a meaningful writing in the exam.
  6. Correct way to write an essay is to divide it into three parts such as Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Give more words in Body section where you should write main points regarding the topic given to write.
  7. In case the topic demands any facts and figures or data, better mention it if you are sure about it or else leave it. Giving an incorrect data or fact will not fetch you any marks. It will make the essay irrelevant and you may lose marks eventually.
  8. Write the essay in paragraphs so that it can be read easily and comfortably by the examiner.
  9. Join SSC CHSL video course in case you are not able to write the essay comfortably.
  10. Go through the previous year question paper to have an idea about the topics being asked in the exam. Read only those articles which are based on the important topics of SSC CHSL Tier 2 exam.
